General user guide

An avatar is a graphical representation in 3D in the virtual worlds. Is usually a human representation, associated with a user for identification in a platform.

It will be necessary to create an avatar for accessing 3D laboratories.

There are two options creating an avatar, one is for students and staff of the Polytechnic University of Madrid and the other is a guest with a limited duration avatar, both from the register button on this website.

You can access from Windows, Mac OS X or Linux with the following minimum requirements :

  • Internet connection: Cable or DSL
  • RAM Memory: 512 MB or higher
  • Processor: CPU with SSE2 -compatible with Intel Pentium 4, Pentium M, Core and Atom or AMD Athlon 64 processor superior. Mac OS X 10.6. Pentium III or Athlon 800 MHz under Linux.
  • Sceern Resolution: 1.024 x 768 pixels
  • Graphic card: it is a very important component, so use the best graphic card you could to get the best user experience possible.

To move between the different regions of GridUPM , which provide each laboratory , you can use the map by clicking on the map icon in the viewfinder or "ctrl + m" , opening a window with the map:

In the map window, clicking on a region will visualize its name, corresponding to the lab.

To go to the desired laboratory there are two options:

  • Write in the table shown in the picture with a red arrow, the laboratory name. Click on finding and will appear a list of matches. Choose the laboratory from the list and click on the "teleport" button at the bottom right.
  • The other option would be to double-click on the map point where the laboratory is.

There is another way to teleport before you log on. Type in the viewer the name of the laboratory where it says "Log in" sañalado in the following figure with an arrow:

To access the virtual world created with OpenSim you must install a viewr on our your computer. On OpenSim´s website all the different viewers appear in a wiki.

Below you can find some of the different viewers compatible with OpenSim:

  • Firestorm
  • Kokua viewer
  • Singularity viewer

Avatar: Graphical representation of a user in the virtual world
 
Grid: By definition is a distributed computing system for sharing resources not focused geographically. Manages, among other factors, the positions of each region in the virtual world, avatars inventory and control of access to the virtual world. (You have to select GridLab grid in the viewer to access. )

Inventary: All the objects that an avatar has.

Loginuri: URL of the grid to which you want to access. You must specify a name and enter the Loginuri to access a grid.

LSL: Linden Script Language. It is the programming language in which are written most of the scripts in opensimulator.

MetaBot: See NPC.;

MetaVerse: Virtual world.

NPC: Non Player Character or MetaBot. It´s an avatar controlled by the system.

Open Simulator: Also known as OpenSim. It´s a free platform capable of supporting an operating virtual world. It supports multiple independent regions connected to a single centralized grid. (Its structure is similar to the Internet, where anyone can set up your own server to display a website and access web pages hosted on other servers)

Prim: Primitive abbreviation. Are the basic objects located in the virtual world, separately or combined together to form a complex structure. Primitives may contain one or more scripts and usually simple manner like a cylinder, a cube, and so on.

Region: It´s the physical virtual space where avatars move and interact. 
It´s square shaped and often contains an island, mountains, ocean or a plain.

Sand-Box: It is said of a region or place in the virtual world aimed at experimentation.

Script: Simple program manager to perform one or more actions. In Open Simulator, the scripts are contained in primitive.

Servidor: Computer that supports one or more regions, the grid , or both.

Stand-alone: It is said of a grid with a single region without Internet access usually aimed at developing controlled content in the virtual world.

UUID: User Unique IDentifier. Unique identifier for each avatar in the grid.

Viewer: Program to display the virtual world and access it. There are several ways to access Open Simulator. The recommended viewer is Phoenix.
